 Paperwork Required to Compete
Physical/Insurance and Parent Permission Slip due Wednesday, January 11th or if joining now asap!

You can either pay $35 for the HISD supplemental insurance or fill out an insurance waiver form (this form states that you will cover all medical expenses in the event your child is injured)

Note: If your child has already played a sport or tried out for one this year we have the physical on file, including insurance (in most cases-please check with the Coach to make sure).

Athlete Expectations

Mission Statement: Track and Field at West Briar should be a positive experience for each athlete, parent, and coach. Each athlete should demonstrate hard work, teamwork, discipline, dedication, selflessness, integrity, and sportsmanship. As they do so, they will improve their performance on the field and develop the character that will make them successful throughout life.

Program Philosophy: Our philosophy is to create a competitive and character driven program for track and field at West Briar Middle School. We hope that each athlete will remember how their experience in Track and Field made them a champion both on and off the field. The greatest rewards that athletes will gain on the track team will be the rewards that come from being a part of a team. We want each player to see the improvement that comes from consistent hard work and to value the importance of a commitment. We also want each athlete to know that he/she has achieved because of continued effort and dedication. Track and Field should be a wonderful experience from which each athlete can always look back and remember the lessons learned, friendships gained, and goals achieved.

Missing practices- Each athlete is allowed 2 missed practices (first time verbal warning, second time call home, third time dismissed from the team) that are unexcused. I do understand that some students have tutorials and also other family business may arise. It is very important that you or your child communicates with the Coach when they cannot attend practice.

Rules for Athlete Conduct

1. Each athlete must treat all coaches with proper respect. Talking back, arguing, fooling around when a coach is talking to the team, or refusing to do what is asked will not be tolerated.
2. Each athlete will treat teammates with respect and friendship. There will be no talking bad about, harassing, or making fun of a teammate for any reason.
3. PROFANITY WILL NEVER BE TOLERATED.
4. Athletes will not cut corners or cheat in any drill or workout.
5. Athletes will not walk when they are supposed to be running.
6. Athletes will be respectful to all teachers and administrators at school.
7. Athletes will excel in the classroom and be an example to their peers. Passing grades are required to participate in athletics, but we expect track and field athletes to far exceed that minimal mark.
8. No athlete will use profanity in the classroom or on campus.
9. No cheating.
10. No fighting.
11. No use of tobacco, alcohol, or other illegal drugs. (Any athlete found violating this rule will be dismissed from the Track and Field program permanently)

It is impossible to list every possible rule that athletes will be expected to follow. The most important thing to remember is that you represent a championship program. We expect all athletes to demonstrate maturity and good judgment in all their actions.

If any athlete violates the above rules he/she will face one or more of the following consequences depending on the severity of the incident.

1. Dismissal from practice and an unexcused absence.
2. Dismissal from the team

Track and Field Events

Sprinters (100m, 200m, 4X100m relay, 4X200m relay, 100m hurdles, 200m hurdles)
Distance (400m, 800m, 1200m, 1600m, 4X400m relay)
Field (Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump and Shot Put)

Track and Field Uniform and Specialty Shoes

West Briar will provide students with a uniform but it must be returned at the end of the season. Not returning a uniform will result in a fee. In some instances athletes are to wear specialty running shoes or spikes. I do have a limited number of track spikes for sprinters only. Depending on your child’s size we may have some he/she can use. These shoes are not necessary for distance runners, in my opinion, but if you would like your child to wear them it is okay and it won’t hurt. I do ask that your child does have a good pair of running shoes that he/she can train in. Please email me if you have any questions about this.

Practice Start Date- Tuesday, January 17th at 4:05pm ending at 5:30pm. Practice is Monday-Friday. In some cases there will not be a Thursday or Friday practice if there is a meet the following day. It will still be winter sports season so the students that are currently in basketball, swimming or wrestling will not start until their sport is done.

Track Meets

Everyone makes the track team. With saying that I must tell you how track and field works. Every week we will have time trials. These time trials will determine what athletes are in the top three in each event. Everyone can try whatever event they like or think they may succeed in. I will then create my track meet roster from these results. There are 13 events and I can take up to 3 or 4 athletes in each event. In most cases athletes will go to the meet in more than one event and some may only get to do one event. For more information please email me.
